(1983) Born and raised in Washington, D.C. Marie Claire experienced a number of different cultures from a very young age. Inspired by her father, she grew up with a camera in hand. She became the editor and chief of her high school yearbook and discovered the power images have in changing a culture in a community. After travelling to Ethiopia for the first time in 2005, she began to pursue photojournalism. She graduated from the University of Maryland College Park in 2006 with a BA in Psychology. Marie Claire has travelled to Ethiopia 4 times, living there for a total of 18 months. Now she is fluent in the national language, Amharic. She plans to learn French, Swahili and Arabic, as she will return to Africa in the future.
In 2009, she earned a certificate in Documentary Photography and Photojournalism from the International Center of Photography (ICP). She has photographed and worked for a number of non-profit organizations including: Fistula Foundation, Invisible Children, Martha's Table, Girls Gotta Run, Ethiopia Reads, Yezellam Minch, Beza International, Global Goods Partners, Help Portrait and Do1Thing. She has been published in the Washington Post, Amnesty International Online, AM New York, Newsday, Indymedia, Capital Newspaper, Negadrass, and HELM Magazine.
She is available for freelance assignments and loves to travel.
